Nutirition education has become a large part of what we can do for the people of Northwest Rochester. Good nutrition impacts every aspect of a person's life.
Our participation in the Garden Project is so exciting! We are collaborating with Foodlink to provide fresh produce for the meals we serve. At our new location, we use our garden in collaboration with the Perkins Youth Development Center at St. Luke's to sponsor a Foodlink nutrition class for summer camp participants.
We built raised beds, filled them with soil, and planted vegetables. Foodlink provides all the materials, including a tool shed and rain barrel for watering plants. In the past we've raised up to 110lbs of food for our Meal Program.
Part of our nutrition education program involves Foodlink sponsored cooking classes for volunteers. One is called Just Say Yes to Fruits and Vegetables (JSY) and participants receive a $5 voucher redeemable at the Public Market or any participating Farmers Market. Another class offered by Foodlink is the Cooking Matters class, which has a chef and a nutritionist. Participants receive a certificate at completion. We are looking forward to classes in our new location.
